- and our Bilia Moses Baskets -

What is Bilia?

'Bilia' means 'newborn' in the Ghanaian language of FraFra. FraFra is the language of the Frafra people of northern Ghana, particularly the Upper East Region, and southern Burkina Faso. It is these talented, entrepreneurial people who create our magnificent, ethically sourced, eco-friendly Bilia Moses Basket and nursery accessories.

Where do your Bilia Moses Baskets and accessories come from?

Our supplier works directly with the local Ghanaian weavers and co-operatives in Bolgatanga and surrounding villages in the Upper East Region of Ghana to produce our beautiful (and practical!) handmade Bilia Moses Baskets and accessories. We like to celebrate the weavers who create our moses baskets and nursery accessories, and you can find images, stories and more about them on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Our suppliers philosophy is to trade with the people of Ghana. Emancipation comes from self-sufficiency, independence and a sense of self-worth. Purchasing our ethically sourced, eco-friendly products helps to empower the talented artisans of Bolgatanga, and the surrounding villages, to thrive through their own enterprises, contributes to sustainable development within the region, and preserves traditional craft skills and practices.

Our mattresses are sourced within the UK, and are custom made to comply with strict British Safety Standards.

What are your items made of?

Our specialist, imported Bilia Moses Baskets and other home and nursery accessories are hand crafted using sun-dried elephant grass, which grows abundantly in this region of sub-Saharan Africa. Our moses baskets and woven accessories are coloured with traditional plant, mineral, and non-toxic fabric dyes to produce contemporary colours, patterns and designs. Each and every piece we sell is unique!

Why are your moses baskets more expensive than 'run-of-the-mill' baby baskets?

In order to ensure that you receive the highest quality goods, we have worked hard to create a trusted supply of goods from the Ghanaian weavers, our suppliers, and our UK custom mattress supplier. Our goods are made in Ghana by talented crafts people who are paid exactly what they believe their goods are worth. They set their own prices for their pieces, and are paid that amount.

Our suppliers, along with ourselves, want to ensure that the community of weavers in Ghana are able to earn a living that they deserve.
